We hear a lot about the positives around virtualisation, but is it all that? Are there instances where it is anything but a desirable technology? Is it suited to all organisations equally?

What the....

Simple rule of thumb is that not all technologies wll suit all companies. There are massive benefits to virtualisation, if your environment is suited to it, what your end goals are and mroe importantly are you looking at ROI, TCO etc etc

Remember every business is different, I have customers who aren't virtualised and it wouldn't help them either. I have others who are fully or semi virtualised - some systems are still not great on a VM platform (no matter what the marketing flyers tell you).

The main key is to spend some time and understand the business objectives, pains, requirements, it plans and future growth plans, management and infrastructure support needs and also age of kit.. Put all this together and you'll find the right fit for them..

solid point

fully agree with the above comments - not everything suits everyone - a bit like fashion really

the other point i would add is to filter through the vendor marketing carefully. The claims are not always what they make out to be and you need to have the right data to make smart decisions

Virtualisation will only benefit those with fat in their servers

If you have lots of machines that are sitting around idling, then sure, virtualisation is going to help. But how common is that exactly?

If you've got a server that is more than 50% utilised, you're only going to make things slower...
