As opposed to every little reseller trying to talk about it, the govt / industry should nominate a few key vendors / resellers to target..
The message is being polluted and confused and to be honest I think companies are shying away from discussing it, due to a serious lack of understanding and also very poor explanations from their partners..
But in answer to your question - the IT industry is not doing enough, based on the above..
I think the government has too much on it's plate at the moment to worry about. I'm sure the planet can wait another few years..
@Anonymous
You have to kidding! The planet can wait????
Get your head out of the clouds and do your research. Go to the IPCC or UNFCCC webpages and learn a bit about why the planet is in trouble.
Yes, the industry and the government need to do a hell of a lot more. IT companies always say they have transformational capacity - well show it already!!
It's not even so much that the planet can wait - the question really is WHY WAIT? Why are we not caring about a sustainable future for our children.
I absolutely agree that we need to all get our heads out of the clouds.
Again on the solution of greener energy, in the US - anyone who uses solar panels for their house, whatever amount that is generated but unused by the owners goes back into the grid. That means the owners will get money back from their contribution and a slice off their electricity bill.
Sure the outlay for IT equipment, or solar panels etc etc are still in its peak, but if everyone does this - then surely the pricing will go down - simply supply and demand law...
and our planet needs it NOW!
I thought my comment might get a reaction "The Planet Can Wait..".. The point really is, why do we all seem to want someone else to tell us what needs to be done.. Why do expect the government to inform us of the changes that need to be made..
What happened to the free thinking human nature that existed all those years to screw the planet up, we all know it's buggered, we all know what we can do to change the odd thing here and there, yet most of us (generalisation) sit and wait like sheep to be ushered into the next stage..
Whould it kill the world if every server was shut, every light in an office was turned down and switched off every night? probably not... Why don't the energy companies consider cutting power to homes at certain hours, you could complete a survey that says for 6 hours at night you don't need power in your house, imagine the difference there..
But no-one seems to want to take the lead everyone's waiting to be directed.. me too...
Without wishing to suggest that the problem is solved, the industry is responding. Check out what The Green Grid is doing for the server market in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency.
SNIA has also just posted its initial storage power management specification which is up for public review and comment at http://www.snia.org/tech_activities/publicreview/
Totally agree with the comments about Government and we are working on a way to create a common discussion platform for all parties which includes all the IT associations and government departments and Green groups.
The earth is fine, THANK YOU - not perfect, but will repair itself as it has for centuries. It's the people who worship the earth who are the problem. This "green" bologna is CRAZY! How about the pollution of immoral behaviors - that really has serious consequences.
So you are basically saying 99.9 per cent of scientists who have looked at global warming lack common sense?
Big claim mate - why don't you check the UNFCCC website and do a bit or reading - or would undertaking research also be something lacking in common sense???
99.9% of scientists believe in "man-made" global warming? That's bologna & it's a bit arrogant to assume that people who disagree with your position don't read or research.
99.9% of scientists believe in mad-made global warming? That's total bologna! It's also a bit arrogant to assume that people who disagree with you don't read or research.
