Canon Pixma MX512: Nice output, pricey black ink 18 May, 2012 07:51:00
The $150 (as of April 16, 2012) Canon Pixma MX512 inkjet multifunction printer (copy/fax/print/scan) is a bit of a mixed bag. Print quality--aside from color graphics on plain paper, which suffered from an excess of orange--seemed very good. Output speeds were easily fast enough for a home office, and the unit sports Wi-Fi as well as an automatic duplexer. On the other hand, the control panel is inefficient and black ink is expensive. - +
MSI GT70 review: Large display, long-Lasting performance 17 May, 2012 10:29:00
The MSI GT70 is a formidable everyday performer, as well as an excellent gaming machine. When the unit's closed, it even looks the part. Flip it open, and MSI might have been better off shooting for an under-the-radar aesthetic rather than incorporating what look like elements from a Cadillac body kit. Appearances aside (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), the GT70 is a very powerful laptop with only minor foibles. - +
HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One review: A welcome replacement 09 May, 2012 23:17:00
The $US129 (as of May 9, 2012) HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One color inkjet multifunction (copy/print/scan) is a decidedly welcome replacement for the HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-in-One--a handsome but disappointing product that lacked manual duplexing and layout support. The Photosmart 5520 makes amends big-time, offering an automatic duplexer as well as both booklet and multipage printing. In other aspects, the units are virtually identical. - +
HP Folio 13 review: An Ultrabook for the masses 22 February, 2012 10:48:00
HP's Folio 13, the first of a new product line designed to appeal to both mainstream and business users, isn't the thinnest or lightest Ultrabook around. But unless you're a fanatic about such things, it will probably fill your needs better than its thinner and lighter competitors. It offers excellent performance and battery life, a fetchingly minimalist design, and a typing experience that thinner units can't match. - +
HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-in-One: Good looks, good output 08 February, 2012 06:46:00
The first thing you'll notice about the HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-in-One color inkjet multifunction printer is that it looks better than the competition. But it's also a good printer, with first-rate output quality and better-than-average print speeds, though ink costs are just average. - +
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus inkjet multifunction printer 12 December, 2011 08:57:00
In a world filled with cheap but underpowered inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs), using the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is a pleasant departure. One of the most competent MFPs for the price (US$300 as of 12/05/2011), it lacks nothing in its features, is solidly constructed, fully supports legal-size paper, is faster than everything else in its price range, and even offers dirt-cheap ink. There's not much more you could ask for. - +
Lenovo IdeaPad U300s: Light, luxurious 16 November, 2011 12:26:00
The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s isn't the fastest Ultrabook we've tested, and ports are minimal, but style and ergonomics make up for a lot - +
Use Linux-like virtual deskops with VirtuaWin 28 September, 2011 06:40:00
Anyone familiar with Linux is probably familiar with virtual desktops. If you're not, download VirtuaWin and take a look. This utility takes your Windows desktop, clones it up to nineteen times, then lets you switch between them. The idea is to keep a set of related programs or documents on each desktop to help organize things for people who leave lots of applications and documents open. - +
Make Your Own NAS Box 21 September, 2011 23:38:00
Network-attached storage boxes are commonly sold already preconfigured with drives, but many companies offer the option for you to build your NAS up yourself. These storage manufacturers sell their NAS devices bare, so you can populate them with the capacity and types of hard drives you prefer. - +
Dell Vostro V131 ultraportable business laptop 03 September, 2011 07:23:00
Dell's Vostro V131 is sedately handsome and a good performer, but has little else to distinguish it from the corporate-targeted ultraportable crowd. Unless, that is, you count eye-catching prices for various configurations, two USB 3.0 ports, and a generally excellent set of features. - +
Oki MC561 colour laser multifunction printer 06 July, 2011 08:08:00
Oki Printing Solutions' MC561 colour laser multifunction printer is well equipped for a busy workgroup, with full print/copy/scan/fax features, outstanding speed, and superior text quality. Graphics quality fell short of my expectations, however, and Oki still has a lot to learn about ease of use. Among MFPs at roughly the same price as the MC561 (US$750 as of June 29, 2011), the slightly less expensive Brother MFC-9970CDW is a bit slower but offers comparable or better features -- and better graphics quality.
