Samsung puts Galaxy Note 7 sales on pause

Orders all global partners to stop sales and exchanges while investigation takes place

Samsung has halted all sales of its flagship smartphone, Galaxy Note 7, after several new reports emerged of repaired devices catching fire.

“We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7,” Samsung said, in a statement.

“Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place.”

In September, the company recalled more than 50,000 devices in Australia, after numerous reports revealed the smartphones were catching fire due to faulty batteries.

The company offered brand new, replacement units - or a full refund - with a courtesy device provided for consumers in the interim of the new devices shipping. After this initial recall, Samsung assured consumers that the fixed smartphones were safe.

Samsung is now advising consumers in its latest statement to stop using the devices effective immediately.

“Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.”

Vodafone has since released a statement declaring that its customers can trade the Note 7 for a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - or another less expensive device.

"From tomorrow, customers are able to exchange their device for a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge or another smartphone in stock of equal or less value," the statement read.

Customers will lose $100 of their investment into the Note 7 if they swap it for the Galaxy S7 Edge. The Note 7 cost $1349 versus the S7 Edge, which is available for $1249.
