GoDaddy enters public Cloud market

Launches solution for small business to compete with Azure and AWS

US-based web hosting and domain name provider, GoDaddy, has launched a public Cloud targeted at small business to compete with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The new offering is an extension of the company’s web hosting and domain name business, leveraging GoDaddy infrastructure for individual developers, tech entrepreneurs and IT professionals to build, test and scale Cloud solutions.

The service uses a utility-based billing model where users are charged an hourly rate with the possibility of setting a monthly cap on usage to avoid bill shock, a common issue with public Cloud platforms.

GoDaddy Cloud Servers are integrated with its products such as domains and DNS. The company said this allows customers to manage and maintain new and existing domains and subdomains. Cloud Server customers will have access to multiple, public facing APIs. The new cloud offering from GoDaddy is available in 26 languages and 53 markets.

GoDaddy hosting and security general manager Jeff King, said the company was aiming for further market share in the SMB space and the release of the platform formed a major part of that strategy.

“We're looking to make it easy for developers to serve small businesses with the technology they want," he said.

"By offering a powerful, yet simple, cloud offering that integrates domains, DNS, security and backups all in one place, developers can save time and exceed their clients' expectations."

The Cloud servers are built on the open source platform, OpenStack, and run by KVM (kernel-based virtual machine) virtualisation using solid state drives for faster read/write times.
