BlackBerry’s PRIV hits Australian shores

Is available exclusively through Optus

BlackBerry has released its first ever Android smartphone to the Australian market.

The PRIV will go on sale from February 4 and will be available to Optus Business and online customers on a range of post-paid plans.

The device has a 5.4-inch dual-curve OLED display with a resolution of 2560x1440 and pixel density of 540 PPI.

It also has an 18MP camera, 32GB of onboard storage and support for microSD cards up to 2TB and offers touch and physical keyboards.

The PRIV has a 3410 mAh battery that the company claims will give full-day battery life of up to 22.5 straight hours of mixed usage.

Intent on maintaining its reputation in enterprise mobility, the device offers advanced privacy controls and integration with Android for Work and Google Play for Work.

The company said its hardware root of trust manufacturing process that injects cryptographic keys within the hardware, was what sets the device apart. Verified boot and secure bootchain keys have been embedded in the PRIV.

BlackBerry added that users are alerted when their privacy could be at risk with the DTEK by Blackberry app for Android, the app that monitors and reports on application access to the microphone, camera, location and personal information.

In addition, the company said the Android-based device poses no threat to the development of its BlackBerry 10 operating system and that it was focused on developing security and privacy enhancements to the platform.
