Customers around the world made the holiday season the biggest ever for Apple’s App Store, setting new records during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s. The company said, in a statement, that in the two weeks ending January 3, customers spent more than $US1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases.
This set back-to-back weekly records for traffic and purchases as January 1 marked the biggest day in App Store history, with customers spending more than $US144 million. It also broke the previous single-day record set on Christmas Day last year.
In addition, Apple claimed 2015 was a record-breaking year for the App Store globally, which has brought in nearly $US40 billion for developers since 2008.
“The App Store had a holiday season for the record books. We are excited that our customers downloaded and enjoyed so many incredible apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, spending more than $US20 billion on the App Store last year alone,” Apple senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, Philip Schiller, said.
“We're grateful to all the developers who have created the most innovative and exciting apps in the world for our customers. We can't wait for what's to come in 2016.”
He added that with two new App Stores for Apple TV and Apple Watch, and the native features for the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPad Pro, developers of all sizes from all around the world have opportunities to innovate across these eco-systems.
“Apple’s four software platforms — iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS — provide seamless experiences across all Apple devices and empower people with breakthrough services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay and iCloud.”
Apple also said largely as a result of the App Store’s success, the company is now responsible for creating and supporting 1.9 million jobs in the US, and the iOS app economy has created 1.2 million jobs in Europe and 1.4 million jobs in China.
