Optus Business has signed a three year, $115 million dollar contract with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

The deal will see Optus Business providing end-to-end telecommunications and managed IT services as part of the merger of the former Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and the Department of Immigration and Border Control into the new entity.

The agreement will see the telco supporting close to 15,000 handsets, more than 1,000 wireless access points and nearly 1,000 LAN switches, CCTV and Radio. This will all be supported by a fully integrated and managed help desk, which will use a combination of its carriage network, satellite communications and mobile data to around 200 sites.

According to Optus Business managing director John Patairidis, the agreement proves the telco's ability to deliver secure, integrated and scalable managed ICT services.

“Optus will be providing design and implementation support as the Department optimises their telecommunications infrastructure, data centres, telephony platforms and their ICT needs moving forward,” he said.

Optus Business is currently a ICT services partner to other federal agencies, including the Australian Taxation Office and the Department of Agriculture.

Randall Brugeaud, the new CIO for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection says the new technology will help the agency support its future vision.

"We are looking forward to working with Optus as we pursue our strategic objectives to promote responsive migration, advance trade and revenue, and lead border innovation."
