Telstra launches Asia’s first Software-Defined Networking (SDN) platform

Telco and IT services company, Telstra, has launched what it calls Asia's first Software-Defined Networking (SDN) platform, which will be made available to its customers globally. The move follows the company’s recent acquisition of Pacnet.

The new global PEN Platform leverages Telstra and Pacnet’s combined infrastructure assets and aims to provide enhanced connectivity and services offerings across Asia and throughout the rest of the world.

Building on Pacnet’s existing sixteen PEN Points of Presence across Asia, the company’s added nine new Telstra PEN Points of Presence to enable a connected on-demand networking platform. It’s also added Network Function Virtualisation capabilities to enhance the agility of the service and allow customers to order network appliances – such as routers and firewalls – on demand.

Telstra global enterprise and services chief operating officer, Darrin Webb, said Pacnet’s adoption of SDN technology has allowed Telstra to accelerate its plans.

"While software, servers and storage have all become virtualised over the past decade, networks have largely remained unchanged. Telstra’s new PEN Platform reimagines the role of traditional telecommunications and enables organisations to complement traditional network approaches with SDN technology.

“This allows for bandwidth to be provisioned on demand, matched to application characteristics and deployed across the specific routes our customers need,” he said.

The PEN Platform is built on Telstra’s global network and the service is available globally in 25 PEN Points of Presence across eight countries – including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the US and the UK. Additional connectivity options into public Cloud services to bridge hybrid Cloud deployments are available too.
