Toga Far East Hotels dumps HP legacy SAN for Pure Storage flash

New flash array will support 60 hotels in A/NZ

Toga Far East Hotels has replaced it's legacy SAN from Hewlett Packard with a Pure Storage flash array to support 60 hotels in A/NZ.

TFE Hotels worked with integration partner Oriel Technologies on the installation, which took just a few hours to complete.

Toga Far East Hotels IT manager, Nick Bell, told ARN the company's existing storage area network was outdated, and after evaluating a variety of options, the high performance, ease of management and the reliability of the Pure Storage array made it an easy choice.

"We had a legacy SAN from HP and that was our primary storage for five odd years," he said.

"It was reaching that point where we were balancing the cost of maintenance with implementing a new array. We had to consider performance as well.

Since implementing the new flash array, Bell said the company has seen a drastic reduction in the physical footprint of its data centre, cutting its SAN footprint from 22RU to just eight.

The reduction in its hardware has also meant a decrease in TFE Hotels data centre power consumption.

"Pure was also of interest based around its simplicity, and we have a small team with a limited storage skill set," he said.

"It's easy to install and it certainly eliminated management complexity.

"The array supports A/NZ operations, so we are looking at 60 hotels. It's runs the most critical applications for our broad business.

He said performance, compared to the legacy system, was "chalk" and "cheese".

"Certainly I don't have any concerns any more. I am confident any issues I have are elsewhere.

"From my perspective, with a small IT team without a high technical skill set, the fact that it just runs and also the experience we have had with their support has been fantastic.

"They almost know something is wrong before I do. With other vendors we have to log a call and wait four hours."

Oriel managing director, Jake Wynne, said the integrator was always seeking out robust and innovative technology solutions to business challenges.

"It is exciting to be working with clients such as Toga that are truly progressive, that consider the big picture of future proofing and who embrace paradigm shifts such as flash," he said.

Pure Storage vice president, Michael Alp, said, the deployment was a great example of how a company with a lean IT team can greatly benefit from Pure’s innovative business practices such as Forever Flash and 24x7 support.

"In addition to this, all-flash provides a smaller physical footprint, greater scalability, simplicity and efficiency in our customer’s data centres which for TFE Hotels, has resulted in increased business performance,” he said.
