Megaport partners Vibe to break down A/NZ connectivity barriers

As part of its global expansion aspirations, Megaport has signed Kiwi telecommunications wholesaler, Vibe Communications, to bridge the connectivity gap for customers operating in both Australia and New Zealand.

The partnership came into motion about six weeks ago when Vibe met with Megaport to understand its goals for the NZ market.

As a Megaport Open Alliance Partner, Vibe gains access to Megaport’s standard 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) ports in NZ under the same cost structure as Australia, and is in return providing full application programming interface (API) integration across both companies’ services via its new venture, IntelliPath.

IntelliPath is a network-as-a-service company which promises dynamic bandwidth on demand capacity via a Cloud-based mobile application. Megaport will utilise the subsidiary to test the NZ market and expand into additional geographies.

Vibe chief commercial officer (CCO), Rudi Hefer, said, “The biggest inhibitor of mass Cloud adoption, particularly in NZ, has been the ability to test services and have dynamic bandwidth allocated to different resources, and if it doesn’t work, you just turn down the capacity.”

“That’s what the integration between Megaport and IntelliPath provides; it makes it easy to dip into Cloud services.”

While IntelliPath serves as a metro component which replicates Megaport and integrates into it, it also differs in that it does not centre on the datacentre.

“Megaport is being very clear of its capabilities being around aggregating content owners on their fabric, and they want this partnership to extend beyond that.”

The partnership is currently limited to A/NZ, but Hefer said Vibe is looking at moving IntelliPath into three datacentres in San Jose, Los Angeles, and London.

Financially, Hefer told ARN that Vibe is conscious it will lose revenue on cross-Tasman data, but claims the short-term loss will be offset by the long-term volume gain. Hefer expects to see return within the next two fiscal quarters.
