Apple has triggered greater competition in the distribution of the iPad with the appointment of Synnex as its third supplier of the tablet in Australia.
This is the first time Synnex has stocked an Apple product of any sort.
The distributor is going toe-to-toe with competitors Ingram Micro and Avnet, both of which have prior experience with the slate and other Apple devices.
Specifically, both Ingram and Avnet sell the iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Apple Display, iPod, and Apple accessories (including Apple TV).
Synnex claims it will add more value to Apple’s authorised reseller network through its logistics centres and warehouses in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth, as well as its recently-launched Sydney facility.
“Our team will be working closely with the reseller channel to provide them with a complete solution, optimum service and support,” Synnex Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ) chief executive officer (CEO), Kee Ong, said.
The distributor has more than 30 trucks, promising just-in-time delivery in metropolitan areas “within hours” of an iPad order being logged.
Apple's appointment of Synnex comes about six months after the vendor cut ties with Dicker Data, ending a multi-million dollar distribution partnership Dicker Data inherited through its acquisition of Express Data and Express Online.
While Apple declined to comment at the time, Dicker Data chief, David Dicker, said his company decided to discontinue the relationship after assessing the figures and concluding it would lose money.
