Vodafone and Optus’ mobile networks took a blow on Thursday, June 19, with the telecommunications providers confirming mobile network outages throughout the day, while Telstra experienced ADSL service disruptions.
A Vodafone spokesperson told ARN that the company’s voice network went down as a result of a failed transmission link in Western Australia on Thursday morning.
It cannot yet confirm whether this initial fault triggered the nationwide disruptions experienced by its customers throughout the day.
Vodafone initially publicised the fault at 1:40pm (despite customer complaints flooding social media prior), and subsequently reported at 2:30pm and 3:15pm that its engineers were working to restore the services.
It initially posted on Twitter that it expected the network to be up and running within the hour, but officially succeeded in reviving mobile voice and SMS services at 5:10pm.
The telco said customers in WA could still face issues (as of 5:10pm).
Vodafone is looking to make amends with customers by way of unlimited data. The telco revealed on Thursday night that it would give both pre- and post-paid customers an unlimited data allowance between 12:01am on June 21 and 3:00am on June 23 at no charge.
Optus first confirmed its network issues after 3:00pm. It said it is aware of the disruptions and that its engineers are investigating the matter.
It advised customers just before 4:00pm that services should be repaired, recommending a handset restart for those still facing troubles. Customer reports indicate some faced connection issues beyond the stated repair time.
Optus attributes its own outages to a "system error" which it claims is "unrelated to other carriers."
It is in the process of contacting those affected to offer account credits of varying values.
Vodafone and Optus' mobile data networks (3G and 4G) remained operational throughout the voice and SMS issues.
Telstra provided a statement on Thursday afternoon that since 2:15pm a hardware fault at its Windsor Exchange impacted "a number of ADSL services" in inner Melbourne and the city's south-eastern suburbs.
The telco said, "A technician is expected to arrive at the Windsor Exchange within the hour to replace the faulty hardware and restore services," and promised a fix within the hour from 4:00pm.
