Tablets, not wearable technology, creating BYOD challenges: Good Technology

Mobile software vendor also finds that the passage of time has not lightened the BYOD burden on businesses

Wearable technology may be generating excitement in the consumer space, but Good Technology claims it has had limited impact in the business world so far.

Beyond smartphones, APAC partner program director at Good Technology, David Cockerham, said tablets are causing challenges for business from a BYOD perspective.

“We’re seeing a significant uptake of tablets, because they are well suitable for information intensive applications,” he said.

Not only do people enjoy using tablets in their personal time, Cockerham said they typically want to bring to work the devices they are familiar with.

“The issue is that these devices don’t have enterprise level security that many businesses need,” he said.

“Most of the data on a consumer device is treated as the same, so there is no extra security in place.”

The journey continues

Despite businesses already experiencing the BYOD trend with the introduction of smartphones, Cockerham said the growing pains had not subsided.

Instead, as tablets continue to proliferate in organisations, Cockerham said workplaces will continue to grapple with the challenges of employees using their own devices.

“One of the biggest challenges continues to be security, and how an organisation ensures that the corporate data on a device the organisation does not own is secure,” he said.

Good Technology is a strong proponent of data containerisation, where private and work data is completely separate on the device, and Cockerham said it is an approach that has worked well in the marketplace.

Beyond the device discussion, Cockerham said companies are also struggling with “bring your own application” such as Cloud storage.

“This raises questions of how organisations have visibility and control over these types of applications that they do not own,” he said.
