The BYOD trend may be growing, though ManageEngine points to the lack of a “gold standard” for effective management as being detrimental.
Product management director, Rajesh Ganesan, said this is particularly true for areas such as information security (IS) and mobile device management (MDM).
“From that perspective, BYOD is still a major pain point for CIOs and CSOs,” he said.
Apple and Samsung have only recently begun to include device management capabilities into their mobile operating systems, and Ganesan said there are others more trying to catch up.
“The sheer variety of devices and the differences in OS versions makes it extremely hard for IT managers to have a consistent and reliable device management program,” he said.
Productivity at the core
Some organisations have attempted to “bring order to the chaos” by authorising only specific device models in their BYOD program.
However, Ganesan said this relies on the users willingly complying with the organisation's BYOD program policy, data and access segmentation, and data ownership.
“Despite bringing massive productivity benefits, BYOD still has issues at all levels, including technical, legal, policies, regulations, and compliance,” he said.
Ganesan clarifies the pain points are mostly concentrated at the management level, and it is the end users that reap the incentives.
When management aims to address BYOD issues, Ganesan said it is important to consider employee and business productivity as the ultimate goal.
