NBN rollout drives telco job opportunities amid downturn

IT job vacancies rise eight per cent in January and February, according to Indeed

The NBN roll out is a bright spot on a dreary job outlook for Telco workers, while IT vacancies have grown healthily to start the year.

That’s according to US-based online jobs ads search engine Indeed.com, which has reported an increase in IT job vacancies of eight per cent in the first two months of the year.

According to the report, the NBN rollout is creating opportunites in telco engineering (network engineers, project engineers) and Installation.

However, the volumes are not overwhelming so it doesn't appear to be having a great direct impact on the industry yet, as many of the roles are contractor positions lasting from 3-9 months.

Opportunities at the largest firms are down 14 per cent compared to November last year.

Indeed Australia country manager, Chris McDonald, said he had seen strong growth in the number of jobs available in key sectors over the past few months, in particular retail and IT.

Growth in IT was fueled by a demand for specific skills sets like software engineers, which remain in great demand (there are twice as many software engineer vacancies currently vs mid-January). “IT opportunities have risen eight per cent since the start of the New Year and Retail vacancies are up 6 per cent in the same period,” he said.

“On the downside, telecommunications continues to be an area of decline in recent times, with opportunities at the larger telecommunications firms down 14 per cent since November 2013.

“This picture fits with our global perspective that suggests the highest demand for skills in coming years in Australia will be in value added sectors such as finance, IT and to an extent, service industries.”

Indeed now claims to have more than 120,000 job ads online available concurrently from 6500 separate sources, versus the 111,000 job ads of current market leader SEEK.
