HP's first enterprise software defined networking system

Software creates new business model for how network services are purchased and implemented

Hewlett-Packard has revealed its first enterprise-class software-defined networking system.

It is hoped the HP SDN Developer Kit and the HP SDN App store will create new business opportunities for partners and provide a simple way for customers to purchase and deploy their network services.

Legacy network rollouts typically require extensive labour and customisation, delaying potential application deployment and limiting development agility.

HP's new software kit promises to automate network operations, while driving innovation and collaboration through an open system.

Telefonica/Vivo data networking manager Ricardo Pedreti said the programme's simplicity and automation removed complexity and accelerated the delivery of next-generation services.

It provides developers with the tools to create, test and validate SDN applications, leveraging HP’s SDN infrastructure and full complement of support services, a HP spokesperson said.

The HP SDN App Store lets customers browse, search, purchase and directly download SDN applications onto their Virtual Application Networks SDN controller, creating a new business model for how network services are purchased and implemented.

HP product manager Christopher Monger said the networking industry was primed for a monumental leap forward.

“HP has created the industry’s most comprehensive SDN product portfolio as well as an open SDN ecosystem, which offers an environment for enterprises and partners to rapidly tune the network to their business and application needs.”

Current SDN ecosystem partners registered for the HP SDN Developer Kit include Aastra, Blue Coat Systems, BlueCat, Citrix Systems, Ecode Networks, F5, Infoblox, Infranics, Intel, Microsoft, MIMOS, PwC, Qosmos, Radware, Real Status, Riverbed, RMIT University, ShoreTel, SAP, Tech Mahindra, VMware, Versatile and Websense.
