SMX makes significant investment into Australia

Hires Mark Wilson as its local country manager and opens up Sydney and Melbourne offices

New Zealand-owned Cloud email security and hosting vendor, SMX, has made some significant investments hiring Mark Wilson as its new Australian country manager and opening offices in Sydney and Melbourne.

Prior to joining SMX, Wilson worked for Telstra for 10 years, most recently as its general manager of enterprise and government sales for Victoria.

“Part of the company’s expansion plans was to put more resources in Australia and build the customer base here,” Wilson said.

The office openings come on the back of recruiting Fujitsu to its partner ranks, and plans to develop its partner base. SMX forms part of Fujitsu’s cloud messaging offering to its customers.

Wilson said he will be targeting mid-range system integrators, small ISPs, telcos and datacentre providers looking to offer white-label Cloud-based email security products for their customers.

“I think there’s a big opportunity here and there’s pretty much no one that does white-labeling in this space. We think that’s a key value-add for resellers,” he said.

Mail filtering is conducted onshore in SMX's Sydney and Melbourne datacentres.

“SMX already has a local hosting capability, which means that resellers can use SMX to compete head to head against Google and Microsoft 365 for customers who want to move their mail servers to the Cloud and want to keep their data onshore,” Wilson said. “Data sovereignty is an issue for companies at the moment and part of the core capability we’re also offering is data loss prevention.”

Wilson said at some point it may consider appointing a distributor to help manage small system integrators.

“In the longer term, that’s where we’ll probably head with it,” he said.

The vendor plans to hire some more partner managers in the next few months and will use technical resources from its New Zealand base.
