ASUS will launch a new, low-cost, 7in Android tablet in Australia next month, the MeMO Pad

ASUS will launch a new, low-cost, 7in Android tablet in Australia next month, the company confirmed today.

The MeMO Pad will sell for $199 when it goes on sale Down Under in "early March", making it cheaper than Google's Nexus 7.

The Nexus 7 tablet, which is also manufactured by ASUS, starts from $249 in Australia for the 16GB model.

The ASUS MeMO Pad features a 7in display with a resolution of 1024x600, has 1GB of RAM and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor.

The tablet includes a 1-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls but does not have a rear-facing camera for still photos. Unlike the Nexus 7, the MeMO Pad has a microSD card slot for memory expansion, so users can expand the 8GB or 16GB of internal memory.

The tablet runs the Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software, though ASUS has not confirmed whether it will be upgradeable to the latest 4.2 version.

The MeMO Pad is slightly heavier than the Nexus 7. It will be available in three colours including white, titanium grey and pink. ASUS says the tablet includes a non-slip, diamond-patterned finish on the back which makes it easy to hold.

ASUS will pre-load a number of its own applications on the MeMO Pad including SuperNote Lite and the BuddyBuzz social network aggregator. The company will also provide 5GB of lifetime storage through the ASUS WebStorage service.

The ASUS MeMO Pad will be sold in Australia through authorised ASUS resellers and major retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Dick Smith Electronics, Bing Lee and Leading Edge.
