The Optus network has been restored to more than 50 per cent of sites that suffered an outage during the devastating floods in Queensland.
All major population centres from Rockhampton to Gympie have Optus 3G and 2G mobile and fixed broadband services, the telco said.
The telco is continuing to work on restoring full service to Brisbane mobile and fixed broadband services and there are still a limited number of sites that need to be restored due to power outages.
Optus 3G and 2G mobile and fixed broadband services have been affected in Laurieton, Camden Haven, Murwillumbah, Burringbar and Byron Bay.
Mobile networks in Bundaberg, Maryborough and Rockhampton are operating as normal with generators deployed and Optus said it was monitoring these areas as a priority.
Bundaberg was severely affected by flood damage, and the telco is making additional handsets available to both evacuation centres in the city. “There are still a small number of mobile outages throughout regional Queensland and NSW due to power and transmission failures, and these are expected to continue to reduce as power is progressively restored,” Optus said.
Optus Queensland director, Sam Kennedy, said there were a number of initiatives in place for people who were still experiencing coverage difficulty.
“Optus consumer and small business customers impacted by the flood damage can divert their landlines to mobiles for free. We’re also encouraging people to head to their nearest Optus ‘yes’ stores where we’ve prioritised additional shipments of SIMs, handsets and wireless modems in NSW and Queensland, so they can stay in touch with friends and family,” Kennedy said.
