Australian IT departments struggle with managing user profiles: AppSense

Aussie IT departments are struggling with managing user profiles as more BYOD projects arise, according to software vendor, AppSense.
The findings were reflected in its survey, which polled 315 IT managers at Microsoft TechEd.
It found that 46 per cent of respondents reported problems with managing user profiles.
AppSense said it is unsurprising that IT managers are struggling with this issue as the average corporation has more than one million unique user configurations to manage and as soon as a device is used, it becomes unique and personalised.
However, the problem is likely to get worse as more employees express a desire to use their own personal devices for work purposes.
“The average employee uses 14 business applications, 22 personal or mobile apps and three computing platforms. As a result, it’s no wonder that companies of all sizes are struggling to manage user profiles,” AppSense A/NZ managing director, Michael Bosnar, said.
“However, the answer is not to lock-down users’ devices or restrict their application choice. Instead, IT departments are increasingly looking at adopting solutions that liberate users to choose the applications they want, access the data they need, on the devices they choose, all while maintaining security and control, and offering an effortless user experience across all computing platforms.”
The poll also reflected that BYOD identified as the most common IT project by 29 per cent. The second most common project is desktop user migration, with 22 per cent of IT managers running or planning such projects.
Along with that, it reflected that 43 per cent of IT managers do not have a solution in place for managing mobility. “This flexibility in IT infrastructure will become increasingly important as more employers offer official work from home schemes in line with the Australian Government’s Digital Economy Goal to double Australia’s level of telework by 2016,” Bosnar said.
