Survey: Apple's Mac line-up still tops consumer satisfaction and reliability

Consumer Reports finds Apple's customer tech support is better than competitors too

Consumer Reports has published the results of its annual Product Reliability Survey, which found that Apple is still coming out on top for consumer satisfaction and reliability.

The survey, which reported on computers from Acer, Apple, Dell, eMachines, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba, resulted in a 78 per cent consumer satisfaction score for Apple. Dell and Lenovo tied at 59 per cent, while Acer, Asus, eMachines, HP, Gateway and Toshiba all scoring between 56 and 54 per cent.

When asked about tech support, CR said that Apple had solved 75 per cent of Mac user problems, while the nearest competitor, Dell, solved 61 per cent.

Apple scored significantly better than competitors in the desktop computer reliability computers, with an iMac repair rate of eight per cent (lower is better). The closest three competitors were HP, which got a rating of 10 per cent, Dell 11 per cent and Gateway 13 per cent.

As for laptops, Apple still got the best reliability score, but by a much lower margin than with the desktop computers. Apple scored eight per cent, and the lowest rating was Dell with 12 per cent.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that it had sold 4.9 million Macs during the fourth quarter of 2012 at Apple's October earnings call. The company's new iMac models are expected to arrive this month, although some reports suggest that supply constraints are causing shipping delays.
