Nokia has revealed its first Windows Phone 8 smartphones, the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820, which will be sold via the channel.

The flagship Nokia Lumia 920 will be sold through Telstra, its other retail partners, and distie, Brightpoint. The Nokia Lumia 820 will be available through Optus and Vodafone, as well as its other retail partners and Brightpoint.

Both smartphones are compatible with all Australian networks including Telstra’s and Optus’ 4G networks.

Nokia A/NZ managing director, Steve Lewis, said both the smartphones will be targeted at consumers and businesses alike.

“We appeal to both groups. For businesses, if you’re running a Microsoft environment, all of that is out of the box with the Lumia range. On the other side, it has got a lot of fun features that are suited for consumers,” he said.

Lewis said he intends to increase Nokia’s market share by working collaboratively with its channel partners. As part of that, Nokia will be educating its partners on the new devices.

“Windows phone is relatively the newest platform as compared to iOS or Android. It will take some time to build up its momentum. With that said, in building the Windows ecosystem, we have got vendors such as Samsung and HTC already adopting the operating system. It’s not about the device, it is about the ecosystem.”

Moving forward into 2013, Nokia is looking to grow its position in the smartphone business and building on its new Cloud-based map service, HERE maps, which is currently available as an app for iOS. The company will soon be releasing a range of devices, covering a wide range of price points for all the different consumer segments.

He also said that it will also be looking into the enterprise value-added reseller system integrated area.

“Many of these channels are used to and comfortable with the Microsoft environments. They haven’t necessarily delved into mobility much to date, so, we think that there is a really great opportunity now to add a Nokia Windows-based smartphone into that mix of their product offering,” Lewis claimed.

The Nokia Lumia 920 combines the familiar Lumia design inspiration with the PureView camera technology, wireless charging, built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) and Nokia City Lens. It has an RRP of $829 and is available in black, white, red and yellow from Telstra, with grey added to the mix in retail.

The mid-range smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 820, has the same look and feel as the high-end Lumia smartphones, but comes with an exchangeable shell.

Beneath the shell is room to insert a micro SD memory card, plus other features including out-of-the-box social networking, navigation, a high-quality Carl Zeiss 8 mega-pixel camera, full HD video recording and NFC technology. The Nokia Lumia 820 is available in black, white, red and yellow for an RRP of $649.

Both smartphones will be available in Australia from the end of November.

Nokia will also be launching a range of accessories alongside the smartphones including wireless charging and speakers.

“From a channel perspective, it gives retailers that opportunity for an extra revenue line and attach something to the sale,” Lewis added.
