Sixty-eight per cent of Australian organisations believe mobile devices and BYOD puts organisations at risk, according to system management software vendor, Quest Software.
The results were reflected in its recent Identity and Access Management (IAM) Index 2012, which aimed to provide a snapshot of the current and planned deployment of IAM in Australian organisations based on a survey of 253 IT decision makers from organisations in various industries.
The Index revealed that 36 per cent of organisations let employees use their own mobile devices on the network, while a further 19 per cent will consider it in the future.
It also showed 52 per cent of respondents have changed their IAM approach because of the proliferation of mobile devices and BYOD.
Quest Software A/NZ managing director, Ian Hodge, said today’s increasing threat landscape has resulted in the deployment of disparate IAM solutions in organisations that require an inordinate amount of time, resources and costs to administer.
“While for many organisations, IAM consumes an immense amount of IT resources, it has also become more important as companies grow increasingly aware of security needs and user productivity challenges,” he said.
Hodge believes that Australian organisations need to start seriously re-evaluating and considering their IAM strategies to deal with an increase in personal mobile devices and BYOD activity.
Other findings from the survey include:
- 10 per cent of Australian organisations have no formal identity and access management strategy
- 60 per cent of Australian organisations believe IAM will be more complex in 2012
- 46 per cent of respondents plan to increase investment in IAM and 51 per cent intend to keep the same level of investment
- 17 per cent of respondents are currently evaluating IAM deployment, 22 per cent are planning deployment in the next 12 months and six per cent are planning deployment in the next 24 months
