IBM heads to Geraldton as part of Smarter Cities Challenge

On Tuesday, IBM’s Smarter Cities experts arrived in the City of Greater Geraldton (CSG) in Western Australia as part of a three-week assessment period.
The visit follows a March announcement, where the technology company declared Geraldton as the recipient of the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant.
The IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a competitive grant program in which IBM is awarding a total of $50 million worth of technology services to 100 municipalities worldwide through 2013. Geraldton is one of 33 cities to receive the grant in 2012, and the second Australian city. Townsville was named a winner in 2011.
Throughout the three-week period, the IBM team will be analysing and recommend ways in which Geraldton can meet its goals.
They include becoming a carbon neutral region, leveraging high-speed broadband, and transforming the relationships between the city, its stakeholders, citizens, and industry through smarter data exchanges.
IBM will provide its recommendations on August 30.
