The Vodafone Foundation will soon be hosting its inaugural ‘Hackathon’ event, App Aid, in an attempt to create apps for a good cause.
It is urging app developers and charities to come forth and collaborate to create apps that will make a positive difference to the community.
App Aid will challenge 10 teams, each consisting of three members from one charity and four app developers, to produce a prototype smartphone app that adds value to the charity and the community it supports within a 48-hour timeframe.
Grants up to $40,000 will be awarded to the two best apps developed. In addition, Vodafone will offer marketing services to help promote the launch of the app. The Vodafone Foundation will also make a $30,000 donation to the charity associated with the successful smartphone app prototype for first place and a $10,000 donation to the charity associated with the smartphone app prototype chosen in second place.
According to Vodafone Foundation head, Demelza Farr, Australia is fast becoming an app nation and users on average, have 25 downloaded apps on their smartphones.
“It offers charities a new world of possibilities to engage with their communities in a relevant, innovative and meaningful way, and will unite developers committed to helping make a difference, with Australian charities that might not normally be able to afford or access these services,” she said.
The event, which will be held in Sydney over 48 hours (September 20 to September 22), is supported by Google, Facebook and Samsung.
To be part of this community event, charities will need to apply between August 2 and August 22, while app developers will need to apply between August 2 and September 10, as well as participate in a short listing process.
“Our goal with App Aid is to spur mobile innovation to help solve some of the challenges faced by charities and their communities. Whether your cause is the relief of poverty, advancement of human or animal rights, if you have a great app solution idea, we want to hear from you,” Demelza added.
