The Vegemite app is your wake-up service for the London 2012 Olympic Games, designed to let you keep track of the upcoming Games despite the annoying time difference.

Basically, the app is an alarm clock with an Olympic events timetable built into it.

While Vegemite offers the classic alarm system, whereby you set a date and time for the app to wake you up, the key feature is the ‘wake up by event’ function. The app allows you to choose a sport, and then decide which game or event in particular you wish to keep track of. For example, if you wish to tune into the gold medal match for the football, you first select ‘football’, then the appropriate game.

What’s really handy is that you can add numerous alarms, so you’re able to plan ahead.

Additionally, the Vegemite app also features a news feed which lists Australian news. Unfortunately, there is no global news, so you will have to rely on other apps to bring you information for other nations.

The last feature of the app is a medal tally, which includes the top five nations and Australia (in case we aren’t up there). Again, this is an annoying restriction if you follow other nations, too.

Unfortunately, unlike the iPhone’s default alarm clock app, the wake-up calls do not work when your phone is switched to silent. Make sure you turn it on loud before heading to bed so you aren’t left disappointed when you wake up a few hours late. Kraft Foods has included a warning when you first launch the app which highlights this. Thankfully, the app does work when your phone is locked.

Pros: Free, alarm by event, works when phone locked.

Cons: Focused on Australian news/progress only, phone cannot be on silent.

Verdict: If you love your sport and the Olympics, this app is the convenient way to ensure you see everything you’re interested in.
