Huawei will sell its Ascend P1 outright through Dick Smith retail stores, the company announced today.
The Ascend P1 smartphone will sell for $499 as an outright purchase through Dick Smith, but consumers won't be able to purchase it on a plan through the likes of Telstra, Optus or Vodafone. Huawei previously promised to launch the Ascend P1 in Australia in May.
Although the company traditionally focuses on budget smartphones, the Ascend P1 is a mid-range device. It measures just 7.7mm thick, runs the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Google's Android software and has a large, 4.3in, Super AMOLED touchscreen.
"The Ascend P1 is not only a highly capable smartphone packing powerful technology; it offers users something that is beautifully designed and crafted," said Mark Treadwell, Head of Marketing at Huawei.
"The launch of this flagship mobile in Australia is further proof Huawei is a disruptive player in the competitive smartphone industry. We are committed to providing Australian consumers with high-quality mobiles combined with honest pricing."
The Huawei Ascend P1 is an almost identical handset to the unreleased Ascend P1 S, though there is a slight difference in size. The Ascend P1 is 7.7mm thick, whereas the Ascend P1 S claims to be the world's slimmest smartphone at just 6.68mm.
Other notable features of the Huawei Ascend P1 include an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with dual LED flash and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling. The phone has a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot for extra storage.
The Huawei Ascend P1 is a quad-band HSDPA device, so it will work on all three major Australian 3G networks — Telstra (850MHz) and Optus/Vodafone (900MHz/2100MHz).
