NBN fixed wireless heading to south-west Queensland

Regional and rural Australia to have access to equally priced broadband

The NBN will be rolled out to 20,000 homes and businesses across 14 councils in south-west Queensland from mid-2013, according to Minister for Broadband, Communications, and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.

The announcement was made in unison with Queensland Senators, Joe Ludwig and John Hogg, and is in line with the Gillard Government’s prioritisation of a regional and rural NBN rollout.

“For too long, people living in regional and rural Australia have had to put up with slow, unreliable Internet connections – if they could get a connection at all,” Conroy said.

Alongside a promise of wholesale speeds that are up to eight times faster than ADSL1, such regions will be paying the same price as a result of a uniform national wholesale pricing that the Gillard Government is promoting.

“This is great news for locals – the NBN will not only provide a massive boost to Internet speeds, but will be a huge boost to these communities,” Senator Hogg said.

At present, 290 homes and businesses in Toowoomba are able to participate in an NBN fixed wireless trial. Another 450 premises in the area will be able to order this trial in the near future.
