EXCLUSIVE: Co-location datacentre facilities top priority for new NextDC CEO

Datacentre provider, NextDC has set a clear strategy for delivering a national network at co-location datacentres and will focus on building those facilities over the course of the next 12 months, its new CEO, Craig Scroggie, said.

“The first part is to continue making sure that all of those co-location datacentres get delivered on time and then, it is overseeing the delivery of all of the facilities from constructive projects to a live operating facility,” he said.

According to Scroggie, the bigger opportunity for NextDC, as a co-location provider, is to enable all of the service providers and partners who are offering managed services, application services, and telecommunications with a rich point of connect to their customer eco-system.

He said that in growing NextDC as a company, he intends to develop future strategies that outline where the company will continue to grow in the coming years and embark on new market opportunities that expand the company’s footprint.

“We think about the NBN, the potential of tele-health and changes in the workforce because of the growth in mobility. It is the digital world and we are right at the hub of it; so the future for businesses looks enormous,” he said.

Over the next few months, Scroggie will be working with NextDC’s leadership team in understanding what the business requires and with its customers and partners in building a large support mechanism to deliver the co-location national network of co-located datacentre facilities.

He intends to use his former work experience in helping the company build relationships with the Government, other CEOs, CIOs, customers and vendor partners, as well as talking to potential new customers and new channel partners.

Scroggie, who starts his role as NextDC CEO today, formerly served as Symantec vice-president and managing director. He has been replaced in that role by Brenton Smith.

Former NextDC CEO, Bevan Slattery, has moved up to the joint positions of executive director and deputy chairman.

Scroggie claimed he left Symantec when he was approached by the NextDC board to be its CEO, after being its non-executive director since 2010.

“I was at Symantec for almost nine years but I always wanted the opportunity to run a publicly listed company. With NextDC building the backbone of what will enable the Cloud with the NBN, I couldn’t think of a better opportunity to be on the peak of that growth curve,” he said.

NextDC’s Melbourne datacentre will be opening on July 4, with the Canberra datacentre following suit. Datacentre builds are also underway in Sydney and Perth.
