Technology distributor, Avnet, has been included in the 2012 CIO 100 list for the second time since its inauguration 25 years ago. It first was awarded the title in 2010.
Avnet is the only technology distributor on the US-based list and joins other IT and telecommunication businesses – such as Accenture, IBM, Intel, Siemens, AT&T, Eaton Corporation and Verizon Wireless.
This annual awards program recognises 100 organisations that have distinguished themselves by creating business value through IT.
The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. Companies had to fill out an online application form detailing their IT and business initiatives. A team of judges reviewed the applications, looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100.
Avnet Technology Solutions Asia-Pacific vice-president of marketing and business innovation, Michael Costigan, said that it was awarded for the work it has done within the datacentre space.
“They gave the award to Avnet for what the team had developed around data storage management, and how we’ve been able to significantly increase our business continuity capabilities for the operations in North America. We will eventually extend that to the rest of the Avnet world,” he said.
Costigan claimed that receiving the award marks Avnet’s representation of the IT solution and distribution business and shows that the company has got the right understanding of the complexities surrounding IT solutions.
“We have got our Global Information Solutions (GIS) team that manages our IT solutions well. So we’re able to take their expertise, share it with our partner community and maintain strong ties with them,” he said.
According to Costigan, to maintain or improve its position, Avnet intends to intensify its business plans, especially as IT is becoming the core part of all businesses.
“More importantly, how you manage, handle and store your data is becoming mission critical for businesses and as a solutions distributor, we have to remain at the forefront of that. So it’s a continual process instead of coming up with one initiative to drive it,” he added.
Presentations to the winners will be made during a gala dinner at the CIO 100 Symposium and Awards Ceremony, held August 19-21, at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
