Local IT leaders go homeless for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout

Leaders from some of Australia’s most successful IT companies will soon find themselves homeless and living in the street.

It is not because of the tough economy and the state of the Australian dollar, but for a good cause, namely the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

The Melbourne IT community in particular has really got behind this year's event, which is going to be held on Thursday 21 June, with Ace Communications Group managing director, Dale Munckton, counting himself among the participants.

Munckton’s entry into the charity event came about following a need to do more than just donate to causes in the old fashion way.

“We were already supporting various charities via monetary donations, but getting involved where you are actually putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation where you actually have to do something compared to just handing over money,” he said.

By participating in the Sleepout, Munckton feels that it will give him and other attendees a “better insight” into the charity and what they are supporting.

“I expect that experiencing what these people are going through, even for one day, will give me a clearer insight and motivate me to stay involved with Vinnies,” he said.

Kogan Technologies CEO, Ruslan Kogan, was approached by the event organisers and asked to participate, and gladly obliged when he found out what the cause was.

“Whenever I can help a good cause like this, I make it a priority,” he said.

As for what benefits Munckton expects from his participation, both for himself and his company, he sees it coming down to educating himself about homelessness.

“Personally, I’m just looking for an insight into what homeless people are going through,” he said.

“From a company perspective, I think it’s great for us to support the work of Vinnies, as well as the chance to network with other business leaders that are like minded in supporting the charity.”

Kogan’s participation comes down sending a message about the struggles faced by the less fortunate.

“For me, it's very satisfying to know that I'm in a position to be able to help those that are more needy,” he said.

“Both myself and Kogan are very active in the community, and we get a lot of fulfilment out of doing all we can to help some very worthy causes.”

One of the ways the Ace Communications Group is raising funds is by auctioning off a rare opportunity to have dinner with not only Kogan, a renowned online entrepreneur in his own right, but also with “charismatic” CatchOfTheDay co-founder Gabby Leibovich.
