Minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, has launched Hewlett-Packard's new $200 million datacentre located in Eastern Creek, New South Wales.

Conroy was joined by HP South Pacific managing director, David Caspari, and HP South Pacific enterprise services vice-president, Alan Bennett.

Conroy said that the facility was "integral to Australian economic growth", delivering to enterprise and the government secure Cloud services that would represent a fundamental change in computing.

He recommended investing in datacentres because of their benefits of reduced cost, scalability, accessibility, and management. He believes that will help organisations focus on their core goals rather than allocating resources to IT.

Conroy said the National Broadband Network (NBN)is critical in allowing organisations to harness the potential of the Cloud as it offers not just better broadband speeds, but also eliminates existing geographical restrictions.

The facility is called Aurora, a name selected from more than 750 name submissions from HP staff.
