Express Data named one of A/NZ's top employers

ICT distributor, Express Data, has been named in the 2012 Aon Hewitt Best Employers (HBE) in A/NZ award, recognising it as a company with elevated levels of employee engagement.
Express Data is one of two IT companies that made the annual best employer list.
Microsoft Australia won the best of the best award.
“It’s nice to be recognised across all industries and, more importantly, it gives us an opportunity to benchmark our people and culture practices against the broader economy,” Express Data CEO, David Gage, said.
In establishing the list of high performing businesses, HBE ranks Australian businesses on how they appeal to and retain talent.
HBE conducts a survey of all employees within a company and holds intensive interviews with the directors and CEOs of the participating organisations before putting together an engagement score to determine the ranking.
Express Data has been participating in the HBE awards each year from 2005 onwards (2005, 2006/07, 2008, 2009, 2010/11, 2012). It has won on three - 2006/07, 2009, 2012 - of the six times.
Gage said that there were a number of factors that led to Express Data’s win.
He said the company’s open communication between employees and a clear vision led to its award accreditation.
“Businesses need to understand what motivates their staff on an individual and team level. There is no one size fits all approach. There are different motivators for different people in different parts of a business,” he said.
Gage added that businesses should also consider taking care of their staff and rewarding them appropriately.
Express Data uses a differentiated awards system that rewards a high performance culture.
Gage said the award represents the company’s movement in the right direction with its strategies.
There is a strong co-relation between staff engagement and business performance, he said.
“My philosophy is that if we have highly engaged staff, then they are going to better serve both our customers and our vendors, which in turn means we are going to be more successful as an organisation. It also means it is a fun place to work,” he said.
To try and win the award again next year, Express Data will be making a concerted effort to ensure that it brings on board and retains the right people tailored for its business needs.
It plans to delve further into its talent identification, recruitment policies and onboarding process to make the company one of the best work environments.
“We will also be investing in training and development, which a lot of companies in the face of a tougher economy have cut back on. We’ve increased our effort in that regard,” Gage concluded.
