Apple’s iPhone 4S activations hit a record high in Q1, claiming the top spot with 37 per cent of all activations, four times the amount of any other device, according to a report by Good Technology.
The Good Technology device activations report, Q1 2012 offers a breakdown of smartphone and tablet devices activated among the company’s enterprise customers, which includes financial institutions, healthcare organisations, half of the Fortune 100, and companies from other major industries.
The iPad 2 claimed second spot, comprising 17.7 per cent of activations, with the iPhone 4 closing the poll positions with just over 15 per cent. The new iPad, which was released in March, managed to sneak into fourth with 4.3 per cent for the quarter, and 12.1 per cent for its month of release.
The top 10 was rounded up (in order) by the iPad, iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy S II, Google Nexus, and Sprint EVO 4G.
Overall, the findings demonstrates that companies are continuing to embrace the BYOD trend, with Q1 numbers nearly doubling that of the previous two quarters combined.
Good vice-president and corporate general manager, Jim Watson, said, “BYOD smartphones and tablets combined with proactive, company-owned iPad deployments are driving rapid growth both the size and number of new deployments amongst our customers.”
“This includes significant growth in the number of Good users who have both a smartphone and a tablet, with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as the most frequently occurring combination.”
Although Apple is currently dominating the activation report, Watson believes that the release of Windows 8 will promote more competition in the enterprise tablet space.
“On the smartphone side, we just released support for Windows Phone 7.5 last week and it will be interesting to see how it performs over the coming quarters,” he said.
In line with Good’s findings, research firm, Gartner forecasts that 118.9 million tablets will be sold this year.
