Skype
Cost: Free | Developer: Microsoft | Platform: Windows Phone 7 | Version: 1.0.0.0 | Size: 6 MB
It’s been a long time coming, but Skype is finally available on the Microsoft’s own Windows Phone 7 platform.
For those who are unfamiliar with the service, Skype allows users to make calls over 3G or Wi-Fi to other Skype users around the world for free.
Over the years, new features such as instant messaging and video calls have been integrated into Skype, and these have also been carried over into the smartphone app.
If you want to make a call to a regular landline or mobile number, Skype offers this function at a price rate that is reasonably competitive.
As expected from a Microsoft product, the Metro interface of the app is well implemented and performance is good.
Pros: A robust communication tool.
Cons: Can’t be run as a background app.
Verdict: The long wait has been worth it.
