Keeping track of your Qantas flight is going to be more manageable now with the advent of an exclusive Windows Phone app.
Developed by Microsoft , the free Qantas app takes advantage of numerous features of the Windows Phone platform, such a Live Tiles, to enable passengers to closely monitor the status of their Qantas flight schedule.
According to Qantas PR and media corporate communication manager, Emma Kearns, the close involvement between Qantas and Microsoft on the development of the app meant that it was a highly collaborative effort.
“The new Windows Phone application was developed by Microsoft in partnership with Qantas,” she said.
“When Microsoft advised Qantas of the capabilities of the Window platform the decision was taken to work together on developing a Qantas App.”
For Qantas in particular, it was the Live Tile feature of the Windows Phone platform that convinced the airline that the smartphone's user base was “a great fit” for a travel application.
“We are always looking for ways to help streamline our customer’s journeys and the Microsoft platform has provided the technology to help us do that with the Qantas App,” Kearns said.
As to why the app is only available on Windows Phone, Kearns attributes this move to the app being part of a “comprehensive roll-out strategy for mobile technology.”
Microsoft’s direct involvement in the project was the other likely reason for the exclusivity.
While the Qantas app is currently only available for Windows Phone, Kearns does not rule out Qantas services coming to other non-Windows Phone devices in one shape or form.
“We will certainly be enhancing our mobile offering for other devices in the near future,” she said.
