iiNet to launch NBN satellite service

Perth-based ISP, iiNet, is gearing up to release its National Broadband Network (NBN) satellite service later this month.

This is part of NBN Co’s interim satellite service intended for remote or rural areas with no metro-comparable broadband services currently available. NBN Co recently committed $620 million to build two new satellite in order to provide more network coverage to remote Australia, something the Opposition is adamantly opposed to.

iiNet is boasting its satellite service will be six time faster than existing plans available with download and upload speeds of up to 6Mbps and 1Mbps respectively.

The ISP has one plan for the NBN satellite service with 20GB download quota for $49.95 per month. This goes down to $39.95 when bundled with a home phone service.

But whether customers are eligible for the service will be determined by NBN Co.

“For us as a business, we’re particularly pleased that we can now offer our customers much improved services, in geographic areas we couldn’t previously reach,” iiNet chief, Michael Malone, said in a statement.

“We currently service more than 9000 satellite customers through our Westnet service, and our expertise is invaluable in ensuring that the customer experience via the NBN will be better than ever.”
