iPhone 5 to have micro-dock connector?

Unconfirmed report suggests Apple is about to ditch the traditional 30-pin connector

Apple is rumoured to be ditching the 30-pin iOS dock connector for a much smaller connector in the next-generation iPhone.

The iMore blog claims that Apple will make the move to a smaller connector not so it can conform to the micro USB standard but to make more space for components in the iPhone 5.

The report claims that the iPod and iPad will also get smaller dock connectors in the future so Apple can make more room for 4G chips and larger batteries in iOS devices.

As the report points out, Apple has in the past done its best to make components smaller - such as the micro-SIM - or move them altogether, like the antenna in the iPhone 4. Also, iMore points to the fact that iOS devices can now update and sync over the air, rather than needing to hook up to a Mac - another reason why the dock connector has become less relevant.

Of course, the article doesn't name any sources, but does admit that a certain amount of conjecture is involved. For example, the prediction that the iPhone 5 will be the first device to use a smaller dock connector rather than the iPad 3, expected to be unveiled in a couple of weeks time, is because the iPad is "a much bigger device which may not be facing the physical size constraints of the iPhone yet".

Meanwhile, iFixit has got its hands on what it purported to be an iPad 3 display, which it sourced via MacRumors and verified that it indeed has a higher resolution than that of the iPad 2.
