No quad-core processor for iPad 3, report claims

The iPad 3 won't have a quad-core A6 processor as some have been predicting, it has been claimed.
The Verge reports that its sources have indicated that the A6 chip will have "a significantly more powerful GPU", it will be a dual-core model.
Plenty of reports had suggested that the iPad 3's processor would be a quad-core model, with BGR recently seeing what it believed to be a prototype iPad 3 with a quad-core A6 processor with the code S5L8945X.
But the anonymous sources quoted in the article seem to be adamant that this isn't the case. The iPad 3, though, will be about a millimetre thicker than its predecessor and have a true retina display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution, the report states.
The article finishes with an interesting theory about when Apple's iPad 3 announcement might take place.
"There are 29 days in February this year (it's a leap year), and the 29th falls on a Wednesday (the day on which Apple has announced every other iPad)," the report's author Joshua Topolsky writes.
"The iPad 2 was announced on March 2nd, 2011, and made available the following Friday (March 11th). If Apple were planning on having these ready for the weekend of March 9th, it seems relatively possible that they could choose that date... perhaps with a catchy theme like 'It's time to leap ahead'."
Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
