Telstra wins bid to expand WA mobile coverage

The telco won a regional mobile contract from the State Government

Telstra has won the contract to expand mobile coverage in regional Western Australia.

As part of the Regional Mobile Communication Project (RMCP), the State Government is investing $39.2 million in first-phase funding to expand the telecommunications network in Western Australia to enhance not just voice services but wireless data services as well.

Telstra will deliver a return of $106 million value which will comprise of direct capital expenditure and access rights to Telstra’s infrastructure.

A total of 113 new mobile sites will be set-up to boost coverage in targeted areas and will increase Telstra’s mobile wireless network footprint in WA by 22 per cent; from 430,000km2 to 525,000km2. Work has already begun on the first sites.

More than 8300km of WA’s highways will have improved mobile voice and wireless capabilities.

The project will take three years to complete and it is tipped to provide economic, health and educational benefits to remote and regional communities in WA.

“The expansion of the Telstra mobile network will provide the communications backbone for the economic and social development of WA for years to come, Telstra Central West regional sales and service director, Richard Fink, said in a statement.

RMCP is funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regional Program.

Once again Telstra get a handout, and do they share the network that we paid for? Of course not!

A condition of the tender is to provide open access to the tower infrastructure for other service providers and emergency services to put their gear on so yes they will be sharing it Matt
