Walmart shuffled its top IT executives last week, promoting CIO Rollin Ford to the position of chief administrative officer for the retail giant. Karenann Terrell, previously assistant CIO, is the new CIO, effective Feb. 1.

Ford, 49, will be responsible for Walmart's information systems division, sourcing, business processes, shared services and customer insights. As CAO, he's charged with helping Walmart meet its goal to reduce selling, general and administrative expenses as a percentage of sales by more than 100 basis points over the next five years.

"Rollin has played a key role in driving process improvement and leveraging technology in the past and will now have broad responsibility for some of the key areas that give us the greatest opportunity," said Walmart CEO Mike Duke (to whom Ford reports) in a statement. "His new position enables us to capitalize on his experience in our information systems, logistics and supply chain divisions, as well as his strength in teambuilding and ability to lead across multiple organizations."

Terrell, 50, will assume responsibility for the company's global technology systems including stores and clubs, supply chain, merchandising and enterprise platforms. She'll continue reporting to Ford. (See also: "Walmart tries new tech with eye on consumers")

Before joining Walmart, Terrell held CIO positions at healthcare company Baxter International, Chrysler Group and Mercedes-Benz North America. She serves on the board of directors for Women in Technology International, and she earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from General Motors Institute.

Walmart announced its IT promotions as part of a broader executive shuffle. Brian Cornell, Sam's Club president and CEO, is departing the company, and Rosalind Brewer is taking over as president and CEO of Sam's Club effective Feb. 1. Brewer was most recently president of the Walmart U.S. east business unit.
