'Slimmer' iPhone coming later this year - analyst

Morgan Stanley analyst believes new touch panel technology will enable Apple to create a slimmer iPhone

The iPhone 5 will launch in the third quarter of 2012 and will be slimmer than current generation models, according to an analyst.

Apple Insider reports that Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty believes the next-generation iPhone will be slimmer than its predecessors due to new touch panel technology.

Huberty conceded that other details of the next-generation iPhone remained sparse. However, she believes that it will come with a quad-mode chip from Qualcomm that would allow it to connect to 3G and LTE networks of all types, meaning that it wouldn't have to manufacture different models for some network operators.

She also believes that demand for the next-generation device will be strong. "What is clear about iPhone 5 is that Apple and its supply chain are positively surprised by the demand for iPhone 4S, which increases confidence in strong sales for iPhone 5 later this year," she wrote in a note to investors.

Huberty's comments broadly agree with a statement made by Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster earlier this week. He predicted a new form factor for the iPhone 5, which he thinks will launch in August, and agreed that demand would be high.

Huberty also confirmed that she expects to see a third-generation iPad with a higher resolution screen launch at some stage in the first half of 2012, with production of the device ramping up towards the end of the first quarter.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
