Telstra has launched a wholesale 3G postpaid mobile service with maximum data download speed of up to 7.2Mbps.
The telco owns and operates one of Australia’s fastest mobile networks, NextG, but the new offering is not a part of that. NextG remains exclusive to Telstra.
The new wholesale product uses parts of Telstra’s 3G network in the 850MHz and 2100MHz frequencies. It covers more than 960,000 square kilometres and reaches 97 per cent of the population.
“This is a competitive and high quality product which delivers great coverage and speed to our wholesale customers,” Telstra said in a statement to ARN. “We believe it is a competitive 3G offering in the wholesale market.
While the maximum theoretical data download speed is 7.2Mbps, typical speeds fall between 550kbps and 3Mbps, according to testing done by the telco. The upload speed range is 300kbps to 1Mbps.
Data download speeds would be dependent on a number of factors including distance from nearest base station, hardware and so on.
Phase one of the new 3G service has commenced. Later this year, Telstra will rollout phase two of the service which will provide support for prepaid, postpaid and wireless broadband service for resellers.
Last year, Telstra launched it’s 4G network in selected areas across the country.
