Swan to open longest fibre optic link

Project under the government's $250 million regional backbone blackspots program

Australia's longest-ever fibre optic link, stretching 3800 kilometres from Darwin to Toowoomba, is about to begin operation.

The link will provide broadband services to more than 160,000 people living in about 30 towns in the Northern Territory and Queensland.

Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan is opening the link during a ceremony in Darwin on Tuesday morning.

The Darwin to Toowoomba link is the fifth and final project under the government's $250 million regional backbone blackspots program.

The program has addressed blackspots across regional Australia, which have been identified as a critical bottleneck in the provision of competitive broadband services.

It is part of the wider national broadband network rollout.
