LG TVs Will Come With Built-In WiDi for Easy HD Media Streaming

LG and Intel have formed a partnership to bring built-in WiDi technology to HDTVs.

LG and Intel will be embedding Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology into LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs, the companies announced Thursday.

This means that if you get one of these smart TVs, you will not need a special adapter for your TV if you want to stream movies or TV shows from a WiDi-capable laptop--you'll be able to stream media wirelessly.

Until today, Intel WiDi technology required special adapters for TVs (made by third parties such as Netgear and D-Link, and costing about $120). These adapters enabled laptops with built-in WiDi to wirelessly stream content, including Blu-ray movies and high-def YouTube videos, to the TVs. Intel also puts WiDi in mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

Built-in WiDi lets users share content without an active Internet connection, and users can still use their devices while streaming (it doesn't "tie down" the device during content sharing). More importantly, of course, is that this will bring people with WiDi laptops and TVs closer to cutting the wires for good: ditching expensive, paid cable service for free Internet TV.

LG is the first maker to launch Intel WiDi on its TVs, and it promises to demonstrate the new technology at CES.
