Visionstream nabs $19 million NBN transit network contract

Work on the transit network commences this month with completion of the project slated for 2015.

Leighton Group subsidiary, Visionstream, has been awarded a $19 million contract by NBN Co to help build the transit part of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The transit network will connect more than 1000 fibre access nodes, which splits the main fibre into individual lines for each premises, to the 1221 points-of-interconnect (PoIs) across Australia.

It is due to be completed by 2015.

The building process will largely use Telstra’s exchanges and dark fibre so not to duplicate existing infrastructure as part of the $11 billion between the telco and NBN Co.

“The transit network will allow NBN Co to connect the different fibre access nodes to points where the traffic will be transferred to service providers,” NBN Co head of construction, Dan Flemming, said in a statement. “We’re very pleased to have secured an agreement with Visionstream Australia to support the construction of the backbone of the NBN.”

Visionstream is no stranger to the NBN as it was one of the companies selected to work on rolling out the NBN to the five mainland trial sites. It also helped out sister company, Nextgen, in the NBN Regional Blackspots Program rollout.

The first stage of the transit network build will consist of 149 transit links connecting 168 fibre access notes where 30 of them are PoIs as well.

Work is due to begin this month.
