MacBook Air 'to sell 1.6m units per quarter in 2012'

Analyst predicts thin-and-light model to generate $7bn in revenue for Apple next year

The MacBook Air will achieve sales of around 1.6 million units per quarter throughout 2012, analyst Mark Moskowitz of JP Morgan has said.

Moskowitz's note to investors, reported by Apple Insider, said that he didn't see Ultrabooks posing much of a threat to the MacBook Air's dominance of the thin-and-light category.

"In our view, Apple's first mover advantage and optimized feature set and form factor command a higher price that early adopters, productivity users, and Apple enthusiasts are willing to absorb," he wrote.

However, if competitors want to challenge the MacBook Air, they'll need to lower prices and offer better features, Moskowitz said.

Analysis: Ultrabooks still trying to find their niche

In the third quarter of 2011, Apple shipped 923,000 MacBook Air units, up 43.8 percent on the previous quarter and 838.6 percent year-on-year. China was the key market for the MacBook Air, where sales gre 339 percent year-on-year in the last quarter, he said.

Apple is reportedly set to expand the MacBook Air line-up with a 15in model early next year, according to sources in Apple's supply chain.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
