Verizon says that it has restored its LTE data services less than a day after acknowledging some customers had been knocked down to 3G speeds.
NETWORK WORLD’S HOTTEST ARGUMENTS: LTE vs. WiMAX
The company first acknowledged that its LTE network went down late Wednesday evening when its news feed sent out a message on Twitter saying that "some customers report operating on 3G speeds or no data" and that the company was “working to resolve some 4G LTE issues.” At around 9:30 a.m. ET this morning the company said that it had successfully resolved the issues and that "LTE service has returned to normal." The company provided no further details explaining what had caused the outage.
Verizon’s LTE network also went down earlier this year when users were similarly knocked down to the company’s 3G EV-DO Rev. A network for days before Verizon got the 4G network back up and running. LTE is essentially a bridge from 3G technologies such as HSPA and EV-DO Rev. A to the 4G IMT-Advanced technologies that the International Telecommunications Union has said will support speeds up to 100Mbps. So far Verizon and AT&T have commercially launched LTE services in the United States while Sprint plans on launching its own LTE services in the second half of 2012.
