Australians look for love on Google

Google has released its annual 'Zeitgeist' lists that showed love was at the top of the 'what is' search list

Australians are looking for love and fascinated by celebrity death — if our internet searches are anything to go by.

Google has released its annual "Zeitgeist" lists that show what we were looking for in 2011, and love was right up there.

Love was at the top of the "what is" search list, though, suggesting we're either a tiny bit confused, romantic or perhaps just jaded.

Google spokesman, Johnny Luu, says the lists offer a glimpse into the big events and emerging trends that captivated Australia.

"What the top overall search list shows is Australians are as obsessed with social networking as ever, with Facebook and YouTube being the top overall searches," Luu told AAP.

Topping the list of fastest rising search queries were the iPhone 5, which has not even been released, video game Minecraft, planking and British singer Adele.

We were so influenced by cooking shows that recipes for red velvet cupcakes, macaroons and pork belly were among the top 10 most popular food & drink searches.

They must have been delicious because Google lists show we all rushed to the internet to look up Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges, the only Australian to make the top 10 list for fastest rising searches for people.

Luu said the deaths of Amy Winehouse and Steve Jobs were among the most popular searches for celebrity deaths, with more Australians interested in the demise of the British singer than of Osama bin Laden.

He said Google was often the first point of call for confirming rumours of a celebrity death, which may explain why Jackie Chan and Hugh Hefner also made the list despite being very much alive.

Luu said we also used google to search for news, so it was no surprise that Cyclone Yasi, the Royal Wedding and the Rugby World Cup were also high on the search lists.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
